Cold Callers. Sussex Police has recently published the following advice about cold callers:

"Over the last week we have had several calls relating to door step salespersons calling late in the evening and using high pressure sales tactics to gain access to properties and obtain debit card details for donations to certain charities. Although they have not done anything criminal they can be quite intimidating.

If someone calls at your door and offers to do repairs to your home or asks to come in so they can talk to you, you should do the following:

  • LOCK – keep front and back doors locked.
  • STOP – are you expecting anybody? Do they have an appointment?
  • CHAIN – put your door bar or chain – it's a useful barrier because they may try and pressurise you or even force their way in.
  • CHECK – check their details carefully but do not let them in. If you are interested then arrange for them to come back later when you have somebody with you and can give some thought to it.

If you suspect the caller may not be genuine please do not hesitate in calling Sussex Police on our non emergency number 101 or if you believe a crime is about to be or has just been committed please dial 999.

If you would like to complain about the conduct of a company’s salespersons please contact East Sussex Trading Standards on 0345 60 80 197."
